Stats highlights from the first day of the third Test between Australia and India in Melbourne

The only other time this happened was when England conceded 500-plus six times in 2006.3 Number of times Australia have posted 500-plus totals in this series, making it only the fifth time India have conceded 500-plus on three or more occasions in a series.379 Runs scored, cumulatively by India and Australia, on the second day – the most scored on the second day of a Test at the MCG in 34 years. Bowlers from no other country have ever conceded 100-plus runs more than 17 times in away Tests in a single calendar year (England in 2002).5 Number of batsmen who have hit a century in each of their first-two Tests as captain – Steven Smith was the fifth. The others are Jackie McGlew, Vijay Hazare, Sunil Gavaskar and Alastair Cook.4 Number of 50-plus scores for M Vijay in this series, making him the first Indian opener to make more than three 50-plus scores in a series in Australia. This is only the second time in Tests that two captains have been dismissed in the 190s in the same year. Brian Lara and Stephen Fleming were dismissed in the 190s against Zimbabwe and Pakistan respectively, in 2003.134 Number of stumpings effected by MS Dhoni in international cricket, overtaking Kumar Sangakkara (133). Dhoni has 38 stumpings in Tests, equalling Syed Kirmani’s record for the most stumpings in Tests by an India wicketkeeper, the third highest overall. Mitchell Johnson was stumped by Dhoni off R Ashwin’s bowling in the first innings.7 Number of times Dhoni has made five or more dismissals in an innings. Only four other wicketkeepers have made five-plus dismissals in an innings on more occasions that him. Mark Boucher leads this list with 14, followed by Rod Marsh (12), Ian Healy (11) and Adam Gilchrist (8).4 Number of times in 2014 that four Indian bowlers have conceded 100-plus runs each in the same innings. Overall, Indian bowling attacks have been at the receiving end of such punishment on 23 occasions.
