Some Liverpool fans would have been worried to see Dejan Lovren’s name listed in the first XI against Manchester City on Sunday.
The defender has spent most of the season so far on the sidelines with a pelvic injury after helping Croatia reach the final of the World Cup in Russia.
At the weekend, though, manager Jurgen Klopp opted to play Lovren alongside Virgil van Dijk in the centre of defence.
Joe Gomez, who has been Van Dijk’s partner up until now, switched to a right-back role, with Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench.
Liverpool picked up a point after Riyad Mahrez skied a penalty, leaving the tie goalless.
Lovren was lucky not to give away a spot-kick earlier in the match, but he did make some crucial tackles, one of which denied Gabriel Jesus in a one-on-one.

On Reddit, plenty of Liverpool fans praised the centre-back’s performance.
Only a few weeks ago, followers of the Merseyside outfit were happy for Lovren to stay out of the squad.
